Job Description:

GAF is looking for a Manager of TPO/PVC. The successful candidate will report to the Senior Director, and enable our important work of product development and improvements.

This individual will lead all technical activities within his or her area of responsibility. This will include receiving assignments in the form of objectives and determining how to use the group resources to meet schedules and goals. The individual will be recognized as a key technical contributor to the area, and provide technical assistance to other functional areas. The individual will be expected to manage his or her resources, particularly the people resources in a manner that will result in maximum productivity while maintaining high morale resulting in a safe working environment.

To accomplish the above the successful candidate:

  • Will foster creativity and support an environment of innovation.

  • Will understand the basic technology involved in the product platform and contribute to its improvement.

  • Will participate in providing sound recommendations, innovative solutions, and technical guidance resulting in a business advantage in their area.

  • Will be a member of project teams led by other functional areas bringing specific expertise and work product to that effort.

  • Will provide guidance to subordinates within the latitude of established company policies and recommend changes to policies as appropriate.

  • Will be expected to provide evolutionary solutions and change to existing practices/products/formulations/processes and develop alternative approaches.

  • Will be expected to refine and reduce to practice patentable/trade secret ideas and concepts.

  • Will network with internal customers and partners, mainly within technical functions and product management, to acquire information for projects.

  • Will be a good communicator in reporting results, conclusions, and future direction for the group to R&D Management, other technical functions, and product management.

  • Will be expected to make technical presentations to outside technical groups and business partners.

  • Will utilize Stage-Gate type process to manage R&D portfolio in the area, and ensure that technical schedule is updated and communicated to all team members and R&D management.

  • Will provide technical direction for several smaller projects and provide technical service for key product lines.

  • Will support the development of a Technology Roadmap for the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in material science, chemistry or chemical engineering.

  • 5+ years experience with project management

  • 5+ years experience in new product development

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with project management techniques.

  • Ability to build and lead technical and cross functional teams.

  • Motivation to coach/train direct and indirect reports to maximize their capabilities

  • Budgetary awareness to support the spending plan for the group.

  • Uses DOE to set up and analyze experiments. Able to use SPC data to determine next steps in process trouble shooting.

  • Knowledge in product quality tests and understands product requirements versus specifications.

  • Has knowledge or and understands the RCN system.

  • Understands broader business strategy, and aligns objectives of the group to deliver what is needed from R&D to succeed.

  • Experience leading product development in the building product arena.

  • Knowledge of the development of roofing products.

  • Knowledge of project road mapping.

  • Approaches problems in an analytical way.

  • Able to establish professional working networks both within the company and with outside entities.

  • Ensures the accurate and timely documentation of all work.

  • Communicates clearly to both R&D management and to subordinates.

  • Provides leadership by example regarding safe work practices.

  • Completes assignments in a timely manner
