Job Description:

SUMMARY

Reporting to GAF’s R&D Manager, Asphaltic Shingles Innovation, the Research Scientist is responsible for driving and contributing to programs to provide new innovative solutions to customers while driving profitable growth. Work may include areas such as: research, applications development, materials enhancements and/or cost-out initiatives. Work with internal and external partners to build the innovation pipeline and develop next generation products and low-cost manufacturing process improvements. Prior experiences in the roofing industry will be desirable. This role is focussed on finding innovative technologies to current residential roofing products, while contributing to continued success of current products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Safety oriented. Keeps safety in the forefront while carrying out all job activities

  • Investigate and evaluate new technologies.

  • Independent judgment in implementing new work methods

  • Represents department at internal meetings and selected external meetings

  • Design and perform experiments

  • Observe and evaluate technology trends and build up an excellent network internally and externally.

  • Independently, work on challenging, highly technical projects that require broad conceptual judgment for which there is little or no precedent.

  • Working with customers to validate product needs and performance

  • Define Materials Science capabilities and resources needed to execute projects in the area

  • Interactions have direct impact on project activities of other team members

  • Designing, analyzing and testing products for development across platforms

  • Leadership/mentoring to associate Scientists / Engineers

  • Assists in the preparation and/or prepares procedures for departments

  • Provides back-up for supervisor

  • Performs experiments with minimum to no supervision, interprets and evaluates data, contributes to written reports

  • Develop IP for new products or new technologies to ensure successful product launch

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD with related experience or a Graduate/Bachelors degree with 5+ years of experience. Preferred education background includes degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Material Engineering, Architectural Engineering and Building Science

  • Project Management experience required with understanding of experimental and analytical research processes and interpretations

  • Demonstrated outstanding research/development accomplishments

  • Readily identified as a key contact in assigned area

  • Broad thinker that can effectively collaborate across regions and cultures

  • Ability to present highly technical material in an easy-to-understand way
