GAF Sr. Quality Systems Engineer in Parsippany, New Jersey

Job Description:

$10,000 SIGN-ON BONUS! Quality engineering professional that drives the continued development, implementation, and maintenance of the GAF Quality Services including Steep Slope, Commercial, Claims & other Quality Services functions. This individual would be able to participate and/or lead quality, process, or product improvement projects. Systems thinking and sustainability are core values in this role in order to support GAF’s future growth.


25% Quality Sustainability

Participates in digital transformation initiatives relating to Quality Systems. Works with corporate controls and IT as needed in supporting plant WinSPC and Envision infrastructure improvements. Teams with Process Services to coordinate training seminars for WinSPC, measurement systems, statistical process control, and others as needed. Aids in managing the GAF quality document library and the Quality Services Google site including support with the RCN/TDN system, and test method & SOP updates.

25% Quality Services Functional Support

Drives the future of GAF Quality through supporting Steep Slope, Commercial, Claims, and Quality Systems improvements. Provide investigation and test support to assure sustainable improvements are implemented in order to reduce New Material and Warranty Claim costs. Work for these systems will include specification reviews and updates, test methods reviews and updates, plant quality assurance support, product conformance, quality management, critical thinking, process control, and process improvement. Participates in Quality Systems & Process Driven Culture Audits. Assists with plant action plans in order to monitor compliance / improvement and assures that this information remains current and properly archived.

25% Process / Product Improvement

Applies knowledge of product construction, manufacturing processes, quality systems and process control to implement innovative solutions that maintain GAF’s competitive quality advantage. Supports process and product improvement investigations, root-cause analysis, variation reduction, and product evaluations in cooperation with Manufacturing and R&D. Fosters the use of continuous improvement tools such as: the 6 building blocks, SPC, Measurement Capability, Statistical analysis, QualPro, Kepner Tregoe’s Rational Process, DOE/MVT, etc. Defines, develops, validates, and refines measurement system needs, tools, and processes. Supports plants in improving data accuracy and precision, adherence to approved methodologies, training initiatives, and supplier performance. Provides advanced statistical analysis supporting process improvement initiatives.

25% General Support

As required, supports priorities, strategic projects, and activities of the Steep Slope Quality Services Laboratory, the asphalt quality program, new product development, customer satisfaction, and PTR’s at plant locations.

Technical knowledge / skills (entry, intermediate, advanced)

  • Full support for behavioral-based safety and compliance of accompanying procedures

  • Intermediate knowledge of process / continuous improvement techniques. Examples include: auditing, root cause analysis (KT), Statistical Process Control, measurement systems, variation reduction, DMAIC, DOE / MVT, etc.

  • Intermediate analytical and procedural development skills

  • Intermediate skills in statistical analysis (experience with associated software such as Minitab a plus). Advanced understanding of statistical tools in order to analyze process and quality data.

  • Intermediate knowledge of domestic and international testing standards / methods

  • Intermediate knowledge of databases (e.g., WinSPC, QualTrend, Excel, etc.)

  • Intermediate knowledge of manufacturing processes

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Technical field (STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) and 3+ years’ experience in industry (roofing preferred)

  • Intermediate statistical background required

  • Strong project management experience

  • Quality engineering credentials are preferred. Examples include: ASQ CQE, ASQ CQM, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.


  • Travel Requirements: up to 25%
